WEE-BIT OF THE EMERALD ISLE - TRUE NORTH ANOTHER ENGH WINNER
By Mike Terrell Special to the Record-Eagle

HARBOR SPRINGS, MI --With his newest course, True North Golf Club, set to open early next month near Harbor Springs, renowned golf architect Jim Engh is on role.

In addition to having The Club at Black Rock in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, being named the "Best New Private" golf course in America in 2003, Engh was also recently named as Golf Digest's first-ever "Architect of the Year."

That same publication ranked Tullymore Golf Club, his first Michigan masterpiece located near Stanwood, as "America's Best New Public Upscale Golf Club" the year previous.

True North is another Engh winner. The antithesis of Tullymore, his other Michigan course which was carved out of wetlands and scrub pine forests, True North is sculpted out of the rolling Glacially carved hill and lake country of northern Michigan. The two courses, one already and award-winning design and the other destined to be, truly shows off his versatility and ability to work with totally different landscapes and topography.

"Jim continues to demonstrate why we selected him to design True North," said Brad McGinnis, co-founder of True North, a golf and real estate community. "And from the outset, he's told us he thinks our project has every chance of being recognized as perhaps the finest course he's done to date."

Engh, a devotee of Irish golf, sprinkled a wee-bit of the Emerald Isle around True North in the design and use of wild native grass along the rough and between holes and in between fair and fairway.

"This golf course is a complete change from Tullymore," said the golf course architect. "From the wetlands of that design to the rolling terrain and valleys of True North the topography and sandy soils are reminiscent of the sites where golf was first played. Add to that the dense northern Michigan forests and we had an opportunity to create something spectacular here."

The unique par-72 layout will measure a little over 7,000 yards from the tips down to 4,808 yards from the forward tees. With four sets of tees to choose from, players ill be able to find a comfortable playing yardage to fit their game. This unique 18-hole layout also features five par-fives and five par-threes.

More than half-dozen ponds scattered around the links will mirror the essence of nearby Lake Michigan, and dramatic bunkering will both help outline the course and collect errant shots. Towering pines and hardwoods line many of the fairways and help define the generous landing areas Engh has built into the design of most holes.

True North is slated to become a private, gated community and will be open to the public for only a limited time.

30 BEST NEW COURSES OF 2004, Travel & Leisure Golf
TRUE NORTH GOLF CLUB, HARBOR SPRINGS, MI--Jan. 2005
Set among glacier-carved hills and deep-cut valleys minutes from Little Traverse Bay, True North is a giddy, rollicking ride through the north woods. Dramatic elevation changes and Jim Engh's recessed bunkers mark the layout, which careers through a thick forest of pines and hardwoods. Views from the skybox tees are a match for the challenge. With only seventy-two home sites sprinkled among the club's 320 acres, the experience at this Audubon International Silver Signature course is pure.

TRUE NORTH, By Jason Deegan
In an area already crowded with star-studded layouts like Bay Harbor and The Heather at Boyne Highlands, True North, which opened last August, fits the same mold.

A big name designer, Colorado-based Jim Engh, Golf Digest's 2003 architect of the year, carved the 7,017-yard course from the northern woods with a sensitivity to the rolling natural terrain. The course is the first in Michigan to become a member of Audubon International's prestigious Silver Signature program. The Silver Signature designation recognizes a club's commitment to environmental planning and resource management.

Engh, who earned many awards with the Tullymore Golf Club in Stanwood, added "sprinkles" of Ireland to True North with unique bunkering. Water comes into play on five approach shots, most notably the large lake on the 442-yard par-4 ninth.

"Four holes have a natural elevation drop of 60 to 100 feet," general manager David Mocini said. "I hate to compare to other facilities, but most people would agree they look like shots from the courses at Treetops (Resort in Gaylord)."

Club founders Jeff Brown and Brad McGinnis' master plan calls for 72 home sites as well. The 6,000-square-foot clubhouse (scheduled to be completed by June) will sit above the 18th hole on the highest point of the property.

Mocini said public tee times, which cost $130 in prime season, might not be available during peak days, so call in advance to see what that day's schedule is.

TRUE NORTH BECOMES FIRST SILVER SIGNATURE MEMBER COURSE IN MICHIGAN
HARBOR SPRINGS, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 13, 2003
Audubon International has welcomed True North Golf Club of Harbor Springs as the first golf course in Michigan to become a member of Audubon's prestigious Silver Signature program. The Silver Signature designation recognizes a club's commitment to environmental planning and resource management. In order to receive final certification for this rigorous program, environmental planning experts at the Audubon International Institute (A.I.I.) will prepare the Natural Resource Management Plan that includes the following key components:

    -- Site Assessment
-- Wildlife Habitat Enhancement & Management
    -- Waste Management
    -- Energy Efficiency
    -- Water Quality & Conservation
    -- Integrated Pest Management

This Plan ensures full compliance with the requirements and spirit of the Signature program. Moreover, the A.I.I. provides consultation, training and education to enhance successful implementation of and long-term commitment to the Natural Resource Management Plan.

"Audubon International is happy to work with True North Golf Club as a newly registered member of its Silver Signature Program," said Nancy Richardson, director of the nationally recognized program based in Selkirk, New York. "The Signature Program was created to recognize developments which choose to integrate sustainable design and management of their property and, in doing so, balance the needs of people with the protection of the environment." Richardson added: "I look forward to working with the True North project team toward that end while applauding it for being the first Silver Signature Program member in Michigan."

True North founders Jeff Brown and Brad McGinnis hope enrollment in the Audubon International program will underscore the club's commitment to environmental excellence. "Every new venture in northern Michigan needs to consider water and ecological issues," said Brown. "Our association with Audubon International will allow us to make the best use of our natural resources while preserving their sanctity." McGinnis says the club's Audubon affiliation should have far-reaching effects in Harbor Springs that will go beyond True North. "Audubon International has already provided us with a vast amount of critical information that we will use at True North and share with our neighbors in the community." When completed, True North will consist of a championship golf course designed by award-winning architect Jim Engh, practice facility, clubhouse and 72 single-family home sites.
